What’s the difference between coaching and mentoring?
While coaching and mentoring both support professional growth, they serve different purposes and follow distinct approaches:
Coaching is a structured, goal-oriented process designed to help individuals unlock their potential, develop new skills, and achieve specific outcomes. A coach does not provide answers but instead asks powerful questions to help clients find their own solutions. At True North, our coaching is focused on self-awareness, clarity, and performance—particularly in areas like leadership, communication, and navigating complexity
Mentoring, on the other hand, is more advice-driven. A mentor typically shares their experience, insights, and guidance based on a similar career path or industry background. It’s often less formal and more long-term, centred around career development and personal insight.
In short:
At True North, we focus on coaching because we believe the most lasting change comes when leaders find their own answers grounded in self-awareness, purpose, and values. However, we do provide mentoring and strategic advisory services also.
What is your coaching philosophy?
Our coaching approach is grounded in the belief that effective leadership starts with self-awareness and alignment with one's values. We emphasise Emotional Intelligence, authentic communication, and purposeful action to help leaders navigate challenges and drive meaningful change.
How are your coaching sessions structured?
Coaching sessions are customised to meet individual needs but typically involve:
Initial Assessment: Understanding your goals, challenges, and context
Goal Setting: Defining clear, measurable objectives
Regular Sessions: Ongoing meetings (in-person or virtual) to work towards goals
Feedback and Reflection: Continuous evaluation and adjustment to ensure progress
What is the duration of a typical coaching engagement?
The duration varies based on individual needs but commonly ranges from 3 to 12 months, with sessions scheduled bi-weekly or monthly.
