When I was leading teams, automation was already nibbling at the edges of marketing workflows, predictive media buying, algorithmic content delivery, performance dashboards.  Now, in Australia, I’m seeing clients overwhelmed by AI’s speed but unsure of how to lead in this new landscape.  
Here is a thought: AI can handle complexity, but only humans can lead through ambiguity.  That’s where your leadership brand comes in.

What Makes a Great Leadership Persona in 2025?

1. Clarity of Purpose

Know what you stand for and communicate it consistently.  People follow leaders with a clear True North, especially when the terrain keeps shifting.  Ask yourself: What are the values I won’t compromise on, no matter how fast things change?

2. Presence in the Noise

Digital presence isn’t about volume, it’s about resonance.  In a world flooded with content, leaders must show up with substance, not just soundbites.  Be visible, but also valuable.  Share what you’re learning, not just what you’ve achieved.

There’s something far more powerful and RARE about sharing what you’ve learned, rather than rattling off what you’ve achieved. It cuts through the corporate theatre and invites real connection. Can you imagine a Town Hall or QBR that kicks off with a leader saying, “Here’s what I’ve struggled with. Here’s what it taught me”? That’s not just refreshing, it’s radical. And in a world drowning in ego and highlight reels, it’s exactly what people crave

3. Empathy in Action

In times of automation, your ability to connect emotionally sets you apart.  Empathy is the superpower AI doesn’t have. Be curious.  Ask questions.  Listen deeply.  Coach others, don’t just command.

I remember leading a pitch years ago with a big client, one of those high-stakes, all-eyes-on-you moments. Everyone was focused on the numbers, the strategy, the latest tech integration, the latest in data strategy. About halfway through, I could tell we were losing the room. The client’s body language shifted. The energy dropped.

So I paused the deck & presenters, looked straight at the CMO, and asked: “What’s the conversation you’re not having but probably should be?"

That moment changed the entire conversation. We stopped talking at them and started listening to them. What followed wasn’t just a better meeting, it was the start of a real partnership.

No AI would have picked up on that shift. No dashboard would’ve told me to change gears. That was human instinct, emotional presence, and empathy in action. And it made all the difference. Sure, it was a risk, but a risk worth taking.

4. Data Fluency, Not Dependency

Yes, you need to understand data.  But don’t let it lead for you.  Use data to inform decisions, not dictate them.  The best leaders combine insight with instinct, the human + machine edge.

A few years ago, I was working with a team that was obsessed with performance dashboards; daily metrics, vanity metrics, real-time updates. One campaign showed a killer click-through rate, and everyone was celebrating. But when we stepped back, we realised: nobody was actually converting.

The data looked great on the surface, but it had pulled us into a false sense of success. When I challenged the team to talk about actual customers, we discovered a total disconnect.

That moment reinforced something I’ve thought many times about and now carry ever since: data should start the conversation, not end it. As leaders, we need to be fluent in data, but still grounded in curiosity, experience, and real human understanding.

A Leadership Persona That Feels Like You

Don’t mistake “brand” for “performance.”  Your leadership persona isn’t a costume, it’s your values, style, and energy, made visible.  The best leadership brands are felt, not just seen.

One of my coaching clients; a brilliant founder of a fintech startup once told me: “I used to think leadership was about being the smartest person in the room. Now I know it’s about creating a room where others feel smart and safe.”

How to Start Building Your Brand, Today

1. Audit your current presence.  What does your team say about you when you’re not in the room?  What do your online platforms communicate?
2. Get feedback.  Ask peers and mentors: What do I stand for?  What impact do I have on others?
3. Tell stories that reflect your values.  Use real examples, importantly wins and failures, that show your leadership in action
4. Invest in coaching or mentoring.  Reflection and guided growth accelerate brand clarity
4. Show up consistently.  Online, in meetings, with your team.  Your brand is built by repetition, not intention
